American Airlines (AA) has informed the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) that it will not use 14 of its 17 allocated weekly U.S.-China routes during the 2023-2024 northern hemisphere winter scheduling season given access to China is expected to remain suspended into 2024. Read More » The oneworld alliance member has asked the DoT for waivers to ensure it retains its traffic rights to the Mainland beyond the northern winter season. AA operates four flights a week from Dallas Fort Worth to Shanghai Pudong and plans to increase the route to daily in January 2024. “American does not anticipate using its remaining 14 a week U.S.-China frequencies in the 2023-2024 winter season,” the airline said in its submission to the DoT. “The department has undertaken laudable efforts to reinstate frequencies for U.S. and Chinese air carriers to ensure parity for the airlines of each country. Despite these efforts, the majority of pre-pandemic frequencies remain suspended and likely will remain so at least through the 2023-2024 winter season,” the airline said. AA's application follows a United Airlines request made earlier this month to waive its 49 a week U.S.-China frequencies.
