Airports association says high fares across the region and to Gulf hampering recovery

Airport Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific director general, Stefano Baronci, said high airfares in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East are hampering recovery from the pandemic. Read More » The airport lobby group's Airport Industry Outlook report for the years 2019-2022, developed with Mott MacDonald, stated airfares in the two regions had risen by 53% in nominal terms, or 35% in real terms. The increases are above the global average, the report said. Despite substantial efforts by airports to freeze or lower airport charges in 2022, Baronci said, the data showed a “fundamental imbalance in the financial stability of the industry” and posed a “threat to the sector's full recovery in 2023”.
