  • Qantas said today it would cut 6,000 jobs – some 20% of the airline group's 29,000 employees. The decision will allow the group to keep about 100 aircraft grounded for 12 more months at least, defer new aircraft deliveries, raise up to A$1.9 billion (US$1.3 billion) in fresh equity and seek A$15 billion in cost savings to 2023 to survive the coronavirus pandemic.   • China Airlines (CAL) chairman, Hsieh Su-Chien, has told shareholders the Taiwan flag carrier was not considering staff reductions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the country's CNA news agency has reported. At CAL’s annual general meeting yesterday, Hsieh said the company would sit down with staff unions to discuss issues that have emerged since staff pay cuts were introduced in April.   • From yesterday, Singapore Airlines (SIA) began accepting transit passengers from China (Chongqing, Guangzhou and Shanghai), Hong Kong, Japan (Osaka Kansai and Tokyo Narita) and South Korea (Seoul Incheon) travelling to any destination served by Singapore Airlines, SilkAir and Scoot. The transit flights are available only for outbound journeys from those destinations, the group’s website said. Read More »

Chinese carriers report encouraging domestic traffic growth for May

  • Cathay Pacific Airways has scheduled 147 flights a week to 28 destinations in July, an increase from 65 flights a week to 18 destinations this month. The July schedule, published on the Cathay Pacific website last Friday, showed 44 flights a week to seven destinations in China, seven weekly to Taipei, eight to two destinations in Canada, 11 to three destinations in the U.S., 58 to 10 destinations in Asia, eight to two destinations in Australia and 11 flights to three destinations in Europe.
