Low-cost airlines continue to use partnerships to fill network white spots and grow revenue. The Jetstar Group has attracted Tigerair Taiwan to be the first airline selling its flights on Jetstar.com, which previously only sold Jetstar-branded carriers from Australia to Japan.

Tigerair Taiwan is available on connecting itineraries, such as Macau to Osaka via Taipei or for using a domestic Jetstar Japan flight to connect to Tigerair Taiwan’s flights to Taiwan. The service, Jetstar Connect, is powered by Dohop, which also enables the Worldwide by easyJet connecting platform and Gatwick airport’s GatwickConnects.

The Jetstar and AirAsia Groups were not involved in earlier LCC partnerships, the Value Alliance and the U-Fly Alliance. U-Fly has ceased activity and Value has gone quiet. One of Value’s members, Vanilla Air, has left the alliance. The two alliances mostly brought together small and region specific airlines to compete with the pan-Asian networks of AirAsia and Jetstar.

The Jetstar Connect platform enables booking of a single ticket on multiple airlines. Customers can purchase ancillaries, including luggage and meals, on both airlines on the Jetstar website.

Jetstar head of alliances and Southeast Asia general manager, Clive Ashmore Butler, singled out the platform as an opening up of an “expanded number of low-cost connections”.

Tigerair Taiwan chairman, Dr. Horng-Jong Chang, alluded to the airline’s need for a virtual network to satisfy self-booking passengers who do not want to use travel agents for complicated connecting itineraries. “We believe this is an emerging trend as more and more travellers want to be the decision-maker when planning their trips,” he said.
